The cause

Helping boys and young men unlearn ideas that can lead to violence

Every play supports gender education for boys and young men, creating the space to question harmful ideas about gender, violence and relationships and helping prevent violence before it happens.

Violence against women and children does not begin with an act of violence. It can begin much earlier, with the ideas boys grow up hearing about gender, power, relationships and what it means to be a man.

Project Unlearn, by TYCIA Foundation, creates safe spaces where boys and young men can question these ideas, talk openly about gender and violence, and learn healthier ways of thinking and behaving. The program uses a 45 hour curriculum, tools and games designed to encourage reflection and behaviour change.

What makes the program especially powerful is that formerly incarcerated young men, who have experienced the consequences of violence, now co-facilitate the program in their communities and become role models for others.

This approach builds on TYCIA Foundation's work in Indian prisons with people convicted of violence and crimes against women, taking those learnings into communities to help prevent violence before it happens.
